Asghar Farhadi’s Spanish language film EVERYBODY KNOWS (2018) explores the same template as in his previous films: a sudden crisis in a seemingly happy set-up that causes ruptures in relationships as layers are gradually peeled off to reveal uncomfortable truths. In this case, the abduction of a teenage girl during a marriage celebration in a Spanish small town causes her parents and loved ones to confront secrets from the past as layers are unpeeled to reveal fractured interpersonal relationships that throw up issues related to power structures and unrequited love.

Though not in the same league as his other films, Farhadi’s latest film nevertheless displays the same relentlessness in its study of human foibles played out through intense drama. With a stellar cast like Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz and Ricardo Darin, it surely makes for engaging viewing.
