Based on the book of the same name SHE SAID by two New York Times investigative reporters Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor – played respectively by Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan in the film by Maria Schraeder, it deals with the role of Harvey Weinstein’s sexual harassment of actresses and assistants when he headed Miramax Pictures, a pioneering production company in Hollywood. The film meticulously recreates the entire probe against the face of not only the bullying tactics of a powerful, obnoxious figure but also the women themselves who were initially hesitant to open up on their sordid stories for fear of being persecuted legally and physically. “It is not only Harvey Weinstein but the system that protects such abusers,” opines a victim. The subsequent New York Times report opened up a floodgate of accusations against Weinstein and also ignited the MeToo Movement across the world.
Incidentally, the 1965-born German director had also directed the acclaimed Netflix mini-series UNORTHODOX (2020) and a few other films. SHE SAID (2022, US) by Maria Schraeder, is streaming on Netflix and makes for a perfect weekend viewing.
